“Jail” College
August 3rd, 2008
Crazy segregation in Indian colleges. Boys are segregated from girls in almost a Gestapo-like fashion. A student gets suspended from school for shaking hands with a girl in his class. WTF?
I’m glad I didn’t go to school there…

Like many things, that news report is a bit exaggerated.
of course, there are institutions, especially engineering colleges in south india which enforce these regulations, but then regulation is usually lax or very haphazard. I used to attend one of those types of colleges. The “segregation” bit is usually not a problem - but there are way other issues which are bigger problems and not highlighted.
Again, understand that this is a small group of private institutions which started this trend - most notably Sathyabama Engineering College in South Chennai - one of the first of this breed. Most often they are just showing off their “discipline levels” by making such rules. This report, like all CNN-IBN reports is highly sensationalized and touches upon a small fragment of Indian education…
Most Arts and Science colleges and of course government colleges are far more liberal.
Don’t get misled by such trashy tabloid sensationalism as exhibited by the likes of CNN-IBN.

Sorry, that video showed a Times Now report. What I actually saw on the internet before was a CNN-IBN report.

It’s easy to blow things out of proportion and get the wrong idea when the news media sensationalizes every little thing. My initial reaction was also “glad I didn’t grow up in India . . . ” as well.

Dude! This has been there for years in Chennai.. Though it looks like its getting a bit too strict with this kinda segregation and is spreading a bit slowly to Bangalore too..
On one hand hand there is a whole world of debatable issues. (I don’t have the correct facts here but the story goes like this) Around 10 years back there was a case of an unruly incident where a miscreet jumped off a bus on to a girl who was getting out of her college or something and she feel hard and had a head injury or something that was fatal. This was blown beyond proportion in all the national dailies .Lot of very orthodox, conventional parents were pissed off. thus (to my limited knowledge) began more stricter control over the sexist issues in school and colleges.
On the other hand, people realized by opting for an institute which enforced such rules.. made them feel it was safer for their children to study there.. after all they send there kids there only for educations, right. (refer: Vel R S College of Management Director, Dr Koteeswaran)
[Other BS from the same Doctor...
"This is for the purpose of safety. We expect girls to be more careful, especially when they climb up or climb down. The kind of dress they wear - churidars (ref:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churidar) and things - might get stamped on and they might trip,"ref:http://chennairulez.blogspot.com ]
Does this make them less broadminded and not forwarded thinking. One does not need to squabble terms like “Co-Education” anymore. Well to my understanding, a temporary solution for a small piece of mind has definitely satisfied all those parents with this kinda strict discipline. But what about the students going thought this on a daily basis. What about the repression and the sad though of never having the freedom to speak to any one they life. (hehe Personally, its just BS). Every parent, teacher or management had been to college sometime in life and its very effed up to see them not understand such situations.
