Feeling the Full Brunt of The Digg Effect

Monday, October 13th, 2008

This evening, pcweenies.net experienced the full effect of Digg.com. I was unprepared for the sudden surge in traffic, and my Wordpress / ComicPress site went down shortly after the comic made Digg’s first page.

Lesson learned: use WP-Super-Cache to make static versions of the pages that can be used in place of the database driven version which consumes ridiculous CPU under an intense load. In the nearly 10 years that PCW has been running, there has only been one other moment when my site was shut down – that was in 2005 when my traffic blew through the bandwidth as a result from being linked over at PvP.

I’m not sure how long pcweenies.net will be down. I do know that my hosting company, Lunarpages, said I was spiking my shared server with 49% of the CPU. Because of this, they were forced to lock my site’s scripts down.

In the meantime, if you’re visiting over from pcweenies.net via the temp page I’ve posted – welcome. I hope UNcubed will tide you over until pcweenies.net becomes operational.

And hey… at the very least, maybe UNcubed will pick up a few new readers. =)

On a serious note…

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

I’m blogging this from the emergency room hospital. Sonia’s had massive diarrhea which started last night and has only gotten worse today. When I came home from work this evening, Aarti mentioned what had happened. Unfortunately for both of us, our Verizon phones are both dead (our new replacement phones arrive on Friday).

Because we couldn’t communicate by phone, I only realized the seriousness of the issue when I came home. More stuff was coming out of Sonia than going into her; we were quite naturally concerned. She also had a terrible rash on her bottoms, no doubt due to the irritation caused by the diarrhea.

We’ve been here since 8:30PM (it’s 11PM as I write this), waiting for our doctor to look at Sonia. I hope that everything is okay with my baby girl. We’re stressing now, not knowing what could have caused this sudden turn of events.

I’ll try to keep everyone posted.
