Applebees would be the first place I'd point them to, then next a burger joint maybe. Those lame family friendly restaurants with cheap lunch-menu specials like TGIFs or Applebees are the first places that come to mind when I think American food.

I go to the ethnic restaurants that I am too lazy to prepare at home. I don't have a favorite type of food, though I do get cravings for certain spices or tastes.
I have found that if you want the best ethnic food, visit a family and eat what they make. Most ethnic diners "Americanize" the food to be more accommodating for the general public.

Kreg, Whenever I get that request, I try to find them a classic style American diner. Hamburgers, sandwiches, pie, coffee, etc.

I love Indian food, but I could see not wanting it often if you get it at home often.

Just a quick question. Do you find that Indian food at restaurants is done differently than at home, or are they similiar? I know my mom's dishes are different than any mexican restaurant I ever ate at.

I worked with some people from China once...and they asked me where can they get "American Food" for lunch. I had to think...what is American food? Meat Loaf? Hamburger?

That's awesome. Growing up weekly menus at our house were always very much the same. Now that I'm out on my own, what do I cook? The exact same stuff Mom always made. And when I eat out, it's always at restaurants like Cracker Barrel which serve the type of food my Mom did. It's funny how we get stuck in ruts. Nostalgic ruts in my case.
