The Mumbai Experience: Part 3

And now we go into overdrive…

Faced with the fear of potentially missing out on the chance to see Aarti and Sonia, I almost resigned myself to accepting the idea of being home alone for the holidays. How does this adventure play out? You’ll have to see what happens next!

The Mumbai Experience: Part 2

Behind the scenes:

I shaved my beard to surprise Aarti. She’d already seen me with the beard via webcam, so the best way to shock her was to show up clean shaven. (It worked.) But that’s a story for another time…

Part 3 continues next week. Keep the feedback coming. And, oh, tell your friends to check out UNcubed. Seriously. Go and tell ‘em. I’ll wait.

Thanks a bunch!

Pizza: Alive and Well in India

Mumbai 2009 part 2

Mumbai 2009 part 2

American pizza chains are big business in India. Dominos, Pizza Hut, Smoking Joes (cool name!), and now Papa John’s! I had to do a double-take when I first saw the sign for Papa John’s – it was in Hindi – but the motto’s still the same. And nearly all pizza delivery is done via motorcycle. It’s not unusual to see a Domino’s or Papa John’s delivery guy cruising around on a typical day. (And even McDonald’s delivers!)

While in India we had pizza once – the day before our return back to the States. It was pretty good, although tailored to the Indian tongue. (We had a veggie pie, which included the standard olives, onions and bellpeppers – with the addition of corn).

As for beverages, I quite enjoyed Kingfisher beer. It’s a bit difficult to find in the US (outside of Indian restaurants, I haven’t seen it anywhere.) The two mugs captured in the photo above were part of an “all you can eat and drink buffet”. Unlimited beers. Imagine that.

Thanks to a family friend, I was able to keep the two glasses as souvenirs from my brief stay in Pune.

Mumbai 2009 part 2

Guess how many of these bags were mine vs. Aarti’s? ;)

Surprisingly, all luggage made it back safe and sound to the US of A.

The Mumbai Skyline

My mother-in-law (Mom), lives smack dab in the heart of bustling Mumbai. I took these photos from the terrace of her flat. On the third picture below, you can see the Indian Ocean. The view from the terrace was spectacular – my photos do little justice to actually being there.

Amidst the busy-ness and din of the city sounds, I found the terrace to be a place of serenity. Enjoy!

Mumbai December 2009

Our trip to Mumbai was incredible. We’re all back home now, far too excited to sleep (probably because we’re still on Mumbai time). Even Sonia’s up! My parents were kind enough to fly down to Tampa a few days beforehand to give us a hand in settling back in.

As to Mumbai … hmmm, where to begin?

There are so many interesting observations I’ve had on my vacation. First and foremost: I didn’t really miss the Internet too much. I thought I would be suffering withdrawal symptoms – but amazingly, I fared pretty okay. (Proof that you can actually survive without being connected all the time. Imagine that?)

Mumbai December 2009

Sure, I occasionally hopped on G-Mail, Facebook and Twitter, just for a few minutes here and there. I originally had a grand vision of blogging every day – but due to limited resources (Aarti’s mom has dial-up) – I quickly gave up on that idea. Instead I spent time in the analog world, from reading newspapers (gasp!) to jotting notes and observations in my personal sketchbook.

We were fortunate to have terrific weather during our entire stay. Winters are very mild in Mumbai, comparable to Tampa. Although, ironically, on the evening we returned home, we found Tampa to be at a shockingly cold 41 F.)

Mumbai December 2009

I’ve sprinkled a few photos to give you a sense of the Mumbai I saw during my stay. There’s more to come, of course. But all in due time…
