…because this happened*:

eye glasses

Sonia loves to play with my glasses – by yanking them off when I least expect it. This pair survived almost 8 months before its untimely death. This is my third pair of glasses in 2 years. One impromptu trip to LensCrafters and a two hundred dollars and change later, I have a new pair. (I also purchased the $25 insurance this time around – if the new pair breaks within the next 15 months, I get a new pair no questions asked.)

eye glasses

In going with the new pair (some Oakleys), I traded up for a more durable (and better looking) frame but lost out on having built-in transition lenses (they were too expensive). I’m hoping I can find someone to repair the old pair so I can have a back-up just in case something happens to the new ones…

* Actually, I’m taking a few weeks off from UNcubed because I need some time to finish some back-burner projects. The time away from the strip should recharge my creative batteries, too. :)

Video: Gene Luen Yang Talks about Breaking into Comics

August 2nd, 2010 | by krishna

Gene Luen Yang: Keynote – Breaking into Graphic Novels & Comic Books Conference from hclib on Vimeo.

Cartoonist Gene Yang is one of my heroes. I thought I’d share his recent keynote with you, not only because it was really entertaining, but because of the fact I could really relate to what he was talking about. I learned that Gene majored in Computer Science in college (I majored in Electrical Engineering). These days he teaches, too – just like me. Through the video I also learned that Gene had an uphill struggle convincing his parents about making the transition towards self-publishing (my experience was similar). It’s my hope to one day meet Gene, if nothing else, to say how much I’ve enjoyed his work (and his presentation).

In the video, Gene talks about his background, his early self-publishing efforts, and how his parents dealt with his burgeoning interest in making comics. In the Q-n-A section, after his presentation, he dives into his comic-making process. I think you’ll find Gene’s keynote to be entertaining, inspirational and informative.

Enjoy!

Your junk, our treasure: Our latest find

A fortuitous trip to dump the trash in our town home complex resulted in another delightful score. This time, it was a baby bike seat. It was sitting forlornly next to the dumpster, awaiting its fate. I inspected the unit, found that it was in excellent shape, and brought it back home. After some cleaning and de-sanitizing, the bike seat was as good as new. Mounting it on the bike was a two person affair, but it only took a few minutes to do.

Aarti and I have always dreamed about going on a family bike ride with Sonia, and now we can! Here are a few pics of the bike with our “new” seat. The last photo was taken by Aarti on our first test ride. :)

Sonia loves the bike seat, and I can’t wait to take her with me on my next bike ride. (We’re looking for a good helmet for her first.)

uncubedthecomic.com gets a new outfit (sorta)

After successfully revamping the look and feel of pcweenies.com, I’m now turning my gaze towards polishing the digs for the UNcubed website. The site’s still very much a work in progress now, but I thought I’d show you a snapshot of how the site’s header used to look, vs. the new one I just installed.

Old and busted:

old UNcubed look

New and hot:

new UNcubed look 7-2010

I feel that the new banner is much more focused than the old one. As always, feel free to send me your feedback on the changes and any new ideas you’d like me to consider implementing.

Update: I added one minor refinement after posting:

Swearing In Ceremony

Hey everybody!

Aarti is now a US citizen. The video above captures the swearing-in ceremony. (You’ll have to click the image to see the video on my Flickr page.) It was indeed a great moment for our family.

Process Work: July 1, 2010 Uncubed

UNcubed 7-1-10 inks and pencils

This is quite possibly the busiest background I’ve included in an UNcubed strip. Each character, building, prop is on its own layer and individually colored.

Handling Aggressive Behavior in Toddlers (Help!)

June 8th, 2010 | by krishna
Posted In: Blog

Ramaah and Rajiv's engagement in Washington DC

I’d like to thank everyone who responded to our previous plea of Sonia’s unrelenting crying through the night. The solution, which we’ve incorporated this past week, is to have Aarti co-sleep in the bed with Sonia. Sonia gets her sleep and so does Aarti. The net result is that they both wake up fresh and happier. So, we’re going with that for a while.

Another problem that seems to have surfaced is Sonia’s toddler tendency towards aggressive behavior. She’ll purposely hit or otherwise attempt to damage something I own just to get a reaction. Speaking to her calmly does not seem to work. Ignoring her does not work. It’s as if she is baiting me to see what I’ll do. The aggression seems to happen at any given point of the day, to where I can’t pinpoint why it seems to be occurring. I’ve noticed that she does this more with me than with Aarti. I’m not sure exactly what to do.

Sonia’s a good girl for the most part, but her tendency to damage things has me concerned. Is this just a part of her “terrible twos” or is there something else I need to be looking out for? Thanks!

I know I don’t post many drawings on the UNcubed blog. I’ve just been incredibly short on time lately. Here’s a quick set of head sketches I drew this evening as part of some unwind time.

Life with Sonia: Dealing with the unrelenting crying

May 23rd, 2010 | by krishna
Posted In: Blog

Sonia’s sleep problems seem to be getting worse over the course of the last few months. We’ve moved her from the crib to her own bedroom. She cries constantly before going to bed, and wakes up crying several times throughout the night. We are unable to soothe her cries, no matter what we’ve both tried (talking, singing, playing her favorite music, etc.)

Both Aarti and I are now at our wit’s end. We have Sonia in a separate room, and based on our pediatrician’s advice, either Aarti or myself will sleep on the floor next to her bed (because Sonia’s insecure). I’m fine with that part, but it’s Sonia’s unrelenting crying that we both can’t seem to figure out.

We’re in the thicket of terrible two’s, but I’m not sure if Sonia’s behavior is normal. We’ve established a nighttime routine, but so far that has not seemed to have any affect on her. Sonia’s very fussy during her mealtimes. (aside: She’s also very picky about her clothes, at only 2.5 years old!)

She only picks at her food, demands something else, and picks at that as well. She doesn’t eat proper meals – despite our best attempts to feed her. It’s gotten so bad for us because our sleep schedule is routinely interrupted every night. It’s really hard to remain patient, but we are doing our best.

Help!

Bruschetta Style Pizza

homemade bruschetta pizza

A charming pizzeria around the corner from our home, San’s Pizzeria, serves up some of  the best pizza I have eaten.

On our last visit there, we ordered a white margarita pizza with a base of cheese, fresh cut roma tomatoes and basil. When the pizza arrived I was a bit worried that it may be too bland for my Indian taste buds, but boy was I wrong…

Nestled in that cheese was the slightest hint of fresh, grated garlic. This was – garlic bread meets cheese pizza – and the chemistry was instantaneous. So, of course I had to try and recreate this at home for my cheese-loving sweethearts. This pizza is well served with a light salad and a glass of wine for the perfect summer supper!

Ingredients:

  • 2 Flatbreads (White/Wheat – from Publix)
  • 2 Roma tomatoes (chopped)
  • 1 tsp grated garlic
  • salt & fresh crushed pepper
  • 1 tsp basil (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 tbsps fresh grated Parmesan
  • 3 tbsps fresh grated mozarella

How to:

homemade bruschetta pizza

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. In a bowl, combine all the ingredients, folding in gently, until the juices are well mixed.
  3. Spoon the bruschetta onto the 2 flatbreads and put them in the oven.
  4. Bake until the flatbread is crisp, about 20 minutes.
  5. Finally, Let the pizzas ‘rest’ for 5 minutes after taking them out of the oven, before serving.

DH (Dear Husband) was delighted and you will be too. Try it, won’t you? What are your favorite pizzas?
