It's actually orange, but looks yellowish because it spreads over the surface of the eye. It's used to look for foreign bodies in the eye, or corneal abrasions. Sometimes it's used to see if the tear ducts are working properly. After the dye is put in, the doctor looks at the eye with a black light. Foreign bodies (lashes, dirt, etc) turn green. It's kinda cool, actually. It's harmless, and rinses out with eye wash. It can discolor the skin, but it's temporary. But you gotta give Appa credit for the snappy repsonse :) Fluorescein.
