I'm not sure I noticed that in India... I mean, when my wife, who's Indian, and I walked around (and so far we haven't been together anywhere except India (which should change at JFK in two weeks)) it's generally been side-by-side, or usually her in front as she was in more of a hurry than me (except in the book store, that's my domain!) and more brave about crossing the busy streets while I hesitate (and I've been hit before, more than once, so I tend to be overly cautious about street crossings).

Otherwise, when I was last somewhere with my brother-in-law and his wife, me and him walked slower while his wife and her cousin were both far ahead of us...

And then there were a few elderly couples who lived on the same street as me the used to go for their walks together, they always walked side-by-side. Though the men usually stopped while the women walked three times around the mandir in the alley next to our apartment building.

The best scenario I witnessed was a couple on a bus - the man sitting in the seat in front of his wife. Despite this, they continued to have their conversation, both shouting (amicably) so that the other could hear. Ahhh, sometimes I really miss Asia...
